since so many european labels have been reissuing lost and obscure 1980s japanese ambient albums of late, it was probably inevitable that at least one label would put together a compilation paying tribute to the sound. it turns out that jazzy couscous has won the race with kumo no moko, a superb double album that does a terrific job in putting japan s 80s ambient scene in context. as you d expect, the majority of the tracks feature either dreamy electronic sounds or a mixture of acoustic and electronic instrumentation, with nods to jazz coming thick and fast. there are naturally a couple of fairly well-known names on show, but for the most part the compilers have done a terrific job in highlight lesser-known tracks from unsung heroes.

teatime dub encounters is the result of a few clandestine hotel room recording sessions, that began a few weeks after underworld and iggy pop had each released their last albums (barbara, barbara we face a shining future and post pop depression respectively) on the same day (march 18th2016). it is neither historical or a tribute to past work. it is the work of artists in motion, engaged in a process that both bring to all of their work – one that uses spontaneity as a spur for creativity.

quazarz came to the earth from somewhere else, a musical ambassador from his place to ours. somehow, through fire or through fury, the palaceer of shabazz palaces caught wind of the tale, and it is through his prism that we hear the story. the beach was there, and atlaantiis, and chemical alterations and cell memories and andre norton, richard k. morgan, and always octavia butler. there were killings and there were votes, and brutality in both. there was sound and there were other worlds, and there was a vastness so participation sometimes came only at the edges. and the palaceer coasted down with the alien notion, like quazarz, and so became. on quazarz when they look at this place they see the inhabitants, the humans, but they don’t assess as we do. and so quazarz was sent to meet a cat with vibration, a creative and courageous, caring, compassionate dude that stood out. the dude was a drug dealer, but that was neither here nor there, until his dealings squashed the rendezvous, leaving our alien alone to figure out what this place is really all about. the vinyl release includes a download code.

…speaking of air and darkness, “born on a gangster star” came into the world in a big damn hurry, like nightfall on an island. you can see it happening, but then again it’s so gradual that the next thing you know - it’s dark.
imbued with the energy and ideas from all the creative embers floating in the atmosphere like fireflies, shabazz palaces recorded this entire album over the course of two weeks with blood in seattle. new gear and new equipment disintegrated comfort zones into dust and a new path appeared in the rubble.

pop makossa - the invasive dance beat of cameroon 1976–1984 the pop makossa adventure started in 2009, when analog africa founder samy ben redjeb first travelled to cameroon to make an initial assessment of the countrys musical situation. he returned with enough tracks for an explosive compilation highlighting the period when funk and disco sounds began to infiltrate the makossa style popular throughout cameroon.

junto club kicked off snap crackle & pop late last year, and now the label returns with the debut solo release from london-based outfit deeds. while rollo and kiri inglis may have previously popped up on an obscure compilation on anti-ghost moon ray, this record should see their coldwave sound shoring up with many more adventurous listeners. video dreams is a beautifully melancholic slice of electronica while unknown reaches for euphoric heights. remixes from bezier and the field round the record out as a wonderful exercise in emotive home listening electronics for sensitive souls.
